Promoting the vital role of unpaid carers during National Carers Week
National Carers Week runs October 15 – 21, 2023. This year theme, ‘Millions of Reasons to Care’, is aptly titled to reflect the underlying reasons for supporting carers, some of whom provide unpaid supports and services to their family members and friends. Some people are concerned that unpaid carers ‘seem invisible to everyday society’.
The aim of National Carers Week is to celebrate the helpful, vital role of some 2.65 Australians, ‘who provide unpaid care and support for someone who has a disability, chronic condition, terminal illness, is frail aged, has a mental health illness, or alcohol or other drug related issue’.
According to Carers Australia, the peak body which represents unpaid carers across the country, there are a number of important reasons for all Australians to promote and support unpaid carers, who play an instrumental role providing daily support and care services without pay or adequate recognition. The reasons to may include:
- To check in regularly with the carers;
- To give them a break from providing care so they may take some time off to relax and reflect;
- To acknowledge and appreciate their incredibly pivotal role in providing care;
- To initiate support to them by asking how you can help or listening to their needs;
- To encourage self-care, to boost their health and wellbeing, in order for them to continue providing quality care to their family and friends;
Carers Australia also has a list of useful resources for people who may need support and care services.
