PM tops up hospital funding, but states still lag on NDIS reform

The states will receive an extra $1.7 billion in public hospital funding next financial year as part of a deal which requires them to help relieve the financial burden of the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

The money, part of a promised five-year funding boost, was handed over despite no state yet to honour their end of the deal.

In announcing the one-year boost, Health Minister Mark Butler said the remainder of the increase would be contingent on the states stepping up on the NDIS. They are required to fund foundational supports for children with mild developmental issues and get them off the NDIS, which was never envisioned to provide such supports.

“The Commonwealth’s very satisfied with progress on NDIS rule reform and also the development of foundational supports,” Mr Butler said.

“But states and territories understand that the conclusion of a five-year deal … remains tied to that NDIS reform process continuing as it would.
